🧭 Preparation Roadmap (Phases)
1
Phase 1: Syllabus Coverage & Concept Building
Month 1 - 6- Read standard university textbooks for core subjects and make detailed formula notebooks.
- Solve in-chapter exercises and understand mathematical assumptions behind engineering concepts.
- Study engineering mathematics and general aptitude concurrently.
2
Phase 2: GATE Specific Solving & PYQs
Month 7 - 9- Solve last 30 years branch-specific GATE questions. Analyze the pattern of questions.
- Learn to use the virtual scientific calculator online to prevent calculation delays.
- Take subject-wise mini tests to gauge technical clarity.
3
Phase 3: Subject-wise Revision & Mocks
Month 10 - 12- Attend full-length test series to build paper-attempting strategy.
- Focus on minimizing negative marks in Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and numerical fill-ups.
- Revise short notes and formula summaries.
🎓 Subject-Wise Focus & Strategy
Engineering Mathematics
High-Yield Topics: Linear Algebra, Calculus, Differential Equations, Probability & Statistics
Carries ~13-15% marks. Highly structured and easy to score if you solve past year paper questions.
General Aptitude
High-Yield Topics: Numerical Aptitude, Verbal Ability, Spatial Aptitude
Carries 15% marks. Regularly solve simple logic, grammar, and arithmetic puzzles to secure these marks.
Core Technical Subjects
High-Yield Topics: Branch Specific (e.g., CS: Algorithms, OS, DBMS; ME: Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials)
Understand the physical significance of formulas. GATE tests application, not memorization. Focus on derivation limits.
📚 Study Resources
Standard Reference Books
- ✔ Higher Engineering Mathematics by B.S. Grewal
- ✔ Standard branch textbooks (e.g. Galvin for OS, Cormen for Algorithms)
Practice Portals
- ✔ GATE Overflow for solution verification and discussions
- ✔ Made Easy or ACE Academy online test series
💡 Pro Revision Tips
- • Get used to the virtual calculator. Physical calculators are not allowed in the exam hall.
- • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions have no negative marking. Attempt all of them, but avoid wild guesses.
- • Do not try to study 100% of the syllabus. Master 80-85% of core subjects thoroughly to score 70+ marks.
