🧭 Preparation Roadmap (Phases)

1

Phase 1: Concept Building & QA Basics

Month 1 - 4
  • Master Arithmetic, Algebra, and basic Geometry formulas.
  • Read high-quality articles from diverse topics (philosophy, science, history) to build comprehension speed.
  • Learn basic logical grouping and arrangement puzzles.
2

Phase 2: Sectional Master & Timing Drills

Month 5 - 8
  • Solve CAT-level Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) caselets daily.
  • Attempt sectional tests under a strict 40-minute timer for each section.
  • Learn to skip time-trap questions immediately.
3

Phase 3: Intensive Mock Analysis

Month 9 - 11
  • Attempt 25-30 national-level mock tests (e.g., AIMCAT, SIMCAT).
  • Spend at least 3-4 hours analyzing each mock test to check alternative methods.
  • Focus on maximizing accuracy in your strong sections.

🎓 Subject-Wise Focus & Strategy

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)

High-Yield Topics: RC Passages, Parajumbles, Parasummary, Odd-one-out

Improve active reading speed. Do not guess answers in RC; look for text-based evidence and eliminate extreme options.

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)

High-Yield Topics: Arrangements, Matrix Match, Venn Diagrams, Graphs, Caselets

Set selection is everything. Spend the first 5 minutes scanning all sets, select the easiest 2-3 sets, and solve them with 100% accuracy.

Quantitative Ability (QA)

High-Yield Topics: Arithmetic (Percentages, SI-CI, Time-Work), Algebra, Numbers, Geometry

Strengthen arithmetic and algebra as they cover ~70% of the section. Practice mental approximations to save time.

📚 Study Resources

Standard Reference Books

  • How to Prepare for QA/VARC/DILR for CAT by Arun Sharma (Tata McGraw Hill)
  • Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis

Reading & Mock Platforms

  • Aeon Essays (aeon.co) for diverse reading material
  • IMS / TIME / Career Launcher Mock Test Series

💡 Pro Revision Tips

  • Accuracy is more important than attempts. Attempting 12 questions with 100% accuracy is better than 18 with 60% accuracy.
  • Do not get stuck on a single puzzle. If a DILR set is not opening up in 7-8 minutes, move on.
  • Read editorial columns of international papers to tackle alien subjects in RCs.
